6 Struggles All Retail Workers Can Relate To
6 Struggles All Retail Workers Can Relate To via Pexels.com 1. âJust Because It Doesnât Have a Tag, Doesnât Mean Itâs Freeâ: I think that just about every retail worker in the world has uttered this phrase to some customer with a wild (and ignorant) sense of humor. Sure, they may just be joking around but after hearing that phrase over and over again while working, you reach a breaking point. Try someone else next time, Susan! Already heard that one! 2. âThe Price on the Tag is the Real Priceâ: For some reason in the world of retail, some customers seem to be under the impression that there is a secret price behind the actual price tag on an item. Though there are times where items are incorrectly priced, 99% of the time, the price on the tag is the final price, no ifs, ands or butts. Just think about it from this angle: itâs literally my job to put prices on things, I think I got the hang of it. 3. âNo I Canât Give You a Discount for X,Y,Zâ: Customers are always looking for a good deal, and I donât blame them because I am the same way when I shop. One thing I donât do, however, is berate the retail worker with discount questions when clearly there is no sign of me getting a discount. Sure, there are some places that have discounts for seniors, veterans and students, or special promotions on discount days, but these discounts are clearly labeled with signs. If there is no reason to believe there is a discount, there isnât one, please stop asking! 4. âYes, I Work Here!â: Though a very simple phrase, this is perhaps one of the most bothersome questions for someone who works in retail. I have a nametag, a lanyard and abide by my companyâs work uniform, yes I do work here, I promise Iâm not just dressing up! That only happens on Halloween if weâre lucky and I guarantee you I will NOT be wearing my work outfit on Halloween. Ever. 5. âYeah, I Can Check the Back!â: A customer usually does not have bad intentions when they ask if an item absent on the floor might be in stock in the back. Itâs a reasonable question, however, the harsh reality is I already know what the back looks like before you even ask. The even harsher reality is knowing thereâs literally nothing in the back and still going back to check anyway because I want to delay telling you we donât have that item and perhaps have two seconds of silence for the day. Iâm sorry, weâre out of stock, but we can order it online to the store for you! 6. âSure, Iâll Get my Managerâ: Thereâs always that one customer that tried to return a used pair of pants, stained with no tag/no receipt that insists on the store policy of giving them their money back. Upon explaining the details of the policy to the customer, they insist they know better than me and want to talk to someone who actually knows what they are doing. Sure, Iâll bring you my manager, just so I can see you get roasted with the same exact information I gave you in the first place, no problem! Be sure to keep in mind when you say this, to have a big smile on your face for dramatic effect. Working in retail definitely has its struggles, but the great thing about it is that your co-workers all share the same struggle and you are all in this together (*cue High School Musical*); am I the only one who thinks that when I hear that phrase? Yeah? Ok.

This means remaining healthy and giving your body all the nutrients it needs as you go through your weight loss journey.See more about nutritious diets here.Youâll often find that you wonât be able to give your body the nutrients that it requires to function at its best.Equally, if you decide to do an excessive amount of exercise in order to lose weight, then you also run the risk of encountering problems, particularly through injury. As such, itâs best to ensure that, whatever diet you do decide to follow, that you follow a weight loss plan that has sustainable, achievable, and sensible goals that youâll be able to meet. For healthy weight loss, it is recommended that adults seek to lose around 1lb (0.5kg) per week. This can be achieved through diet and calorie counting, as well as thr ough exercise, although a combination of good diet and exercise is often most effective.Itâs important to note that dieters often find it relatively easy to shift those initial few kilos, especially if they are overweight, to begin with. However, at some point, itâs very likely that your weight will plateau and it will become harder to shed those extra few kilos. If this does happen, try not to be too disheartened, as it is still possible to lose weight, but it may be time to tweak the number of calories being consumed, the amount of exercise youâre doing, or a combination of both.Losing weight can be a great time to try out new types of exercise, and if you have found youâre plateauing when it comes to weight loss, introducing a new form of exercise may help shift some extra weight. So if youâve always wanted to try swimming, but never got around to it, it may well be the time to start!Equally, you could try out different workouts at the gym, or take up a team sport such a s football or rugby. If you are thinking about starting a new exercise regime, remember that it may be best to speak with your doctor in the first instance, particularly if youâre unsure about whether your fitness level will allow you to do the kind of exercise you would like.Find a nutritionist near me here.Exercise and a good diet is part of healthy weight loss. (Image Source: CC0 1.0, Artheos, Pixabay)Get The Right SupportThere are plenty of networks out there that can provide tips and tricks when it comes to supporting you in your weight loss journey. For instance, the NHS and the British Dietetic Association have a number of resources available online that you can look to for support and ideas on how to lose weight effectively. If youâd like any additional support or one to one coaching on how to lose weight, there are other, more personable avenues available. Superprof, for instance, has a range of nutrition tutors, who can be on hand to provide key motivation and support as you go through your weight loss journey, all while teaching you about the benefits that good nutrition can have on your body.Key Tips For Healthy Weight LossWhen it comes to losing weight, there are always some crucial rules to follow, such as:Making sure you donât go over your daily calorie allowance;Balancing a good diet with regular exercise; andStaying motivated and developing healthy eating and exercise habits so that you can maintain your weight loss over the long term. While these rules are relatively well understood by many, the simple fact is that they arenât always as easy to follow. If they were, then we wouldnât be facing issues such as rising rates of obesity and everyone would be a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI).As a result, itâs important to try and stay motivated whenever you do undertake a weight loss plan, to make sure that you keep eating healthy, balanced, and nutritious meals and ultimately minimise or even cut out unhealthy foods and snacks, such as cake , chocolate, or fizzy drinks.Remember that everyone's rate of weight loss is also different. This may be down to factors such as your own metabolism, your usual eating habits, and what your weight is before heading into any weight loss programme. So try not to compare your progress with anyone else's - with consistent diet, exercise, and keeping any major cravings at bay, successful weight loss is possible. As such, to help set you up for success, here are some useful tips to remember:Donât Forgo BreakfastYouâve heard the saying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. While youâll hear arguments in support and against that statement, the fact is that eating breakfast can have a huge influence on how successful our weight loss efforts are.It not only is a great way to get a head start on eating one of your five a day (for example, by adding banana or berries to a fortified breakfast cereal) but by eating breakfast you also reduce the risk of being hungry throughout the day. Often, if you skip breakfast, then you may find yourself snacking more than often to feel full. This can lead to poor, impulsive food choices that arenât nutritious, which may ultimately undermine your weight loss efforts. There's no single solution when it comes to finding healthy weight loss techniques that work for you. (Image Source: CC0 1.0, lawrencebland, Pixabay)Aim For A Balanced DietA balanced diet is so important when it comes to weight loss nutrition. Ideally, you should try to make sure that:Youâre eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day;Youâre eating regular meals so that you stay full and avoid unnecessary snacking;Drink plenty of water each day to keep hydrated; andYou incorporate a mixture of carbohydrates, proteins, fibre, and some dairy or dairy-substitutes into your diet. One way you can make sure that youâre getting the right nutrients is to become better at reading food labels on supermarket food packaging. By learning what in formation is displayed on the labels, you can make more informed food choices when you go shopping, and choose healthier, less-processed foods over products that may look healthy from their packaging but may actually not be.For instance, did you know that many cereal bars are actually full of sugar? While learning how to read food labels is a great skill to have, particularly if youâre looking at improving your overall nutritional intake, itâs also worth remembering that no-one is perfect, and sometimes we might make less-than-optimal food choices. If you do have a bad day and have a few too many sugary snacks or drinks, the main thing is to not punish yourself. As long as you stick to a healthy eating plan and exercise regularly, the weight will ultimately come off.You can learn all of the healthy eating strategies from nutritionist courses!Unhealthy snacks, such as chocolate, should only be eaten in moderation when aiming for healthy weight loss. (Image Source: CC0 1.0, OpenCli part-Vectors, Pixabay)Plan Meals In AdvanceAnother great tip to keep motivated with your weight loss plan is to try and plan meals in advance. By planning out your main meals each day, along with any snacks youâd like, you reduce the risk of becoming hungry and buying something unhealthy that will satisfy your cravings - an action which could put your weight loss plans in jeopardy.By planning meals, you can also help ensure that youâre getting a good amount of nutrients through your food each day, whether thatâs through the inclusion of foods such as lean meats and leafy green vegetables, to snacking on nuts such as almonds. If youâre struggling with designing a meal plan for a week, or even longer, then you may want to turn to a nutrition tutor at Superprof for help. A nutrition tutor will be able to teach you about the basics of good nutrition, and can also provide you with meal plans that will appeal to your appetite and keep you feeling full for longer.Whatâs more, they can also offer other tips and tricks when it comes to losing weight, for instance, by suggesting that you get in the habit of eating smaller portions of food, to avoid overeating. These tips can be great in helping you to stay motivated as you continue along your weight loss journey.Simply enter your postcode to find a nutrition tutor near you, or to find a tutor that is able to offer tutoring services remotely. The Introverts Guide to Positive Office Politics - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / The Introvertâs Guide to Positive Office Politics - Introvert Whisperer The Introvertâs Guide to Positive Office Politics Isnât positive office politics an oxymoron? Especially for an introvert? Office politics, like many things, has its positive and negative sides. We notice the negative, which is disgusting and dysfunctional. It often harms or abuses others in the process, and the rest of us try to avoid the fallout. What we tend not to notice is the positive office politics that take place, mostly because we donât recognize it for what it is. When it works well, it makes a group efficient, productive and satisfied. To sort this out, you first need to understand the definition of office politics. Define Office Politics In its simplest form, office politics is about building relationships to achieve some kind of end result. Itâs the dynamics between people who work together that determines such things as support, engagement, and advantages for each personâs goals. Itâs the basis of decision-making. Itâs how things are done anytime you have a group of people working on something (which can include your neighborhood association, church, nonprofits and the list goes on). As you can see, that is a fairly neutral concept neither positive nor negative. What leans the needle in one direction or the other is the action of the players. With that in mind, how can an introvert wage positive office politics and not lose their soul or self-respect in the process? Consider this: Form Mutually Beneficial Relationships Letâs face it: we form relationships for selfish reasons, even if it is simply because we like the other person. Itâs time for you to think more strategically. Who in the organization is in a position of influence or power? Who are the stars? These are good people to hang out with. Success rubs off. But, whatâs in it for them? What do you bring to the party? Figure it out and then focus on that as you form these strategic relationships. Manage Up Spend time observing your boss and their boss. Figure out whatâs important. Once you do, engage them in conversations and information exchanges where their interests and your job intersect. Donât assume upper management knows anything about what you do or how you contribute â" so, tell them! Adapt their priorities and keep them updated. Itâs hard to not totally love and support someone who has your back as a boss. Be Clear About Your Goals You must have a career goal in mind for any of this to make sense. Otherwise, youâre just doing a job with no real âend-state.â Armed with goal clarity, share your destination with those bosses. When you donât advocate for yourself, the assumption is youâre happier than a clam where you are. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) Influence Decisions This is where introverts really can shine. We prefer to form our relationships one at a time. While youâre busy chatting up your various strategic relationships, engage them and influence their thinking toward support of your needs. Obviously, you are there to reciprocate. Reciprocity is a highly influential action, and you want to plan to do it often. Read the System As an introvert, itâs very easy to hunker down and focus on the task at hand. It can be too easy to ignore what is going on around you with all of that focus. At the drop of a hat, someone can fall into or out of favor, and you need to pay attention. There are reasons for this type of shift, and you not only need to be aware of it so you can also adjust your strategy but you need to learn from it. This should inform your behavior going forward. Itâs All About Reciprocity If you havenât caught on by now, Office Politics is all about the relationships and what each person gets from another person â" that serves their goals or agenda. You can choose to be âaboveâ office politics and when you do, you put your future at peril. I suggest you pick waging Positive Office Politics. How Introverts Can Cope With Depression in the Workplace - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / How Introverts Can Cope With Depression in the Workplace - Introvert Whisperer How Introverts Can Cope With Depression in the Workplace If you suffer from something like carpal tunnel or a bad back while at work, chances are youâll take steps to address the issue. Youâll take proper breaks, stand up and stretch on a regular basis, and get some lumbar back support or a more ergonomic chair. After all, itâs natural to address our physical ailments â" especially in our workspaces, where we need to maintain productivity. One struggle that often goes unnoticed, however, is depression. The long-term, slowly creeping, nefariously subtle onset of depression can make it difficult to identify as an issue in the first place. But once it has taken hold, depressionâs elusive ability to be properly addressed can make it extremely difficult to deal with ⦠and cripple our ability to work for months and even years at a time. Not Alone Suffering from depression isnât an uncommon issue. In fact, depression could take second place as a leading global cause of disability as soon as 2020. In other words, a lot of people struggle with depression. Not only that, but introverts, in particular, are often more susceptible to slipping into a depressed state of mind. The revelation is hardly a surprising one; introverts have busy, bustling minds that are constantly churning. They can easily get lost in unexpressed thoughts and emotions, and their typically creative minds can leave them feeling unfulfilled and uninvested in the humdrum daily happenings that surround them. They also can be perfectionistic and severely critical of themselves, both of which, when unchecked, can feed into self-esteem issues and, consequently, depression. Of course, being introverted isnât the only thing that can exacerbate depression symptoms. It can develop from a variety of other things as well. For example, seasonal changes can lead to seasonal affective disorder. Hormonal fluctuations from things like premenstrual syndrome or post-birth âbaby bluesâ can intensify depression for women as well. Anxiety and stress, in general, are also common culprits. When life throws stressful events our way, they can often be difficult to process. Sometimes, depending on the individual and the cause of the stress, it can blow over quickly and everything will go back to normal. However, if our brains get stuck in overdrive â" an easy thing for an introvert â" it can seriously affect our mood and predispose us to depression. Coping With Depression in the Workplace Whatever the cause, once depression has taken hold, it can be intensely difficult to break free. This is compounded by the stigma associated with mental health, which can prevent workers from seeking mental health resources and support. But that doesnât mean itâs impossible to address it. In fact, there are quite a few ways to actively combat depression as you go through your workday. Drink Tea Studies have shown that drinking green tea can have a positive effect in the fight against depression symptoms. It has also been linked to reward learning â" the idea of following a positive experience with a positive response â" which, in turn, can also directly impact depression. In other words, green tea is a win-win in more ways than one. Take a Mental Health Day Mental health days are the cognitive equivalent of a sick day, and theyâre growing in popularity as more workplaces acknowledge the importance of tending to their employeesâ mental health as well as their physical ailments. Itâs a trend that employees should take full advantage of. Being able to tap out for a day or two in order to tend to your mental state can be an excellent way to combat workplace depression. Analyze Your Thought Processes Of course, if you take a day to rest your mind, you donât want to spend it stewing over depressing thoughts. Whether youâre taking a mental health day or not, itâs important to also make sure to take the time to analyze and address your thought processes. The good news here is that introverts have an advantage: Theyâre typically more practiced in the realm of cognitive analysis since they spend so much time thinking and pondering. This gives them a leg up on identifying bad thought processes and cognitive distortions. The critical factor here, though, is that you make yourself willing to identify shortcomings and incorrect thoughts without simply allowing it to dogpile on your self-esteem issues. When taking the time to analyze your thoughts, make sure to keep a positive mindset and look for ways to improve your mental state rather than simply finding more reasons to be depressed. Donât Give Up on Appearance It doesnât matter if youâre attending a networking event or getting ready to work from the couch all day â" if youâre struggling with depression, itâs critical that you make an effort to make yourself presentable. If you actually take the time to get dressed, brush your teeth, and tend to your overall appearance, it will naturally help promote positive feelings about yourself. Get Some Sunshine Sunshine is an age-old prescription for depression. Itâs important to understand, though, that you may need regular and prolonged treatment for weeks to feel the full effects of this one. If you can get some daily time in the sun, it shouldnât be long before you start feeling a difference. Studies have shown that âlight therapyâ has been effective for as much as 70% of those fighting against SAD symptoms. Take Breaks Taking breaks is an important part of any workday. Itâs already proven to boost productivity, but it can also help fight depression at the same time. Not only does this give your mind an important rest, but it allows you to stretch, get some exercise, and even seek out some sunlight or another cup of green tea. Gaining a Deeper Understanding As a final piece of advice, remember that youâre not alone in your struggle. As you try to implement various ways to relieve your depression symptoms, rest in the fact that there are countless others quietly struggling by your side. The plain truth is, everyone fighting depression is searching for a solution to their problem. Yet, no one will ever create the âperfect formulaâ that answers every conundrum that depression presents. And itâs okay to not have those sudden, life-changing answers. Rather, try to focus on small but significant changes. Sooner or later, youâll begin to feel the shackles of depression shake loose and a more positive mindset become the norm once again.
